SelfDesign Style!
In SelfDesign we tend to do things differently, and thus we have created a full-time learning program for kindergartners that reflects our philosophy of the continuance of elements like play, exploration, and a nurturing family environment during a child’s formative years.
As a parent of a kindergarten-age child, (and for other families new to SelfDesign), you will be able to choose between two streams for our full-time learning program (You will make your choice as you begin the learning year) :
Stream A:
1. Every two weeks you will write an Observing for Learning which focuses on your child’s activities and how he or she is experiencing them, with your Learning Consultant (LC) responding with support and resources. Fundamental to these writings is the SelfDesign approach that learning for this age group is grounded in curiosity, exploration and relationship. For more information please see What is Observing for Learning.
2. During the alternating weeks you will participate in an online workshop , “A SelfDesigning Path,” created by River Meyer (our SDLC Family Liaison), that is an orientation to fundamental ideas about relationships that characterize the SelfDesign philosophy. The workshop has been created in short sections, easily done in your own time on your own schedule, one for every other week. It’s not just text but also has rich imagery, video and audio clips, and journaling tasks that ask for your personal reflection.
The writing you do for the journaling tasks will be included instead of an O4L for that week, and your LC will converse with you regarding the entries.
We feel that this practical orientation to SelfDesign provides parents, new to SelfDesign, with a firm foundation for learning with their child.
Below are included 2 short samples from 2 sections of the SelfDesigning Path workshop….we hope they will pique your interest!
